Good Enough Mom

I have a confession. I am not the perfect mother and I never will be. The bad news is that I am not even striving for perfection in mothering. This may shock some people who have been caught in the wake of my self-proclaimed perfectionism. It is true that in most things I have a more difficult time letting go of those glossy ideals I hold in my head but in this case I make a continual and constant effort to just be "good enough". I believe that this is one area where my training as a therapist has been beneficial to me. In the world of psychoanalysis there is a wonderful theory about the "good enough mother"*. This is a theory, developed by Donald Winnicott, that I hold close to my heart. Among other things, Donald Winnicott was a pediatrician, psychiatrist and psychoanalyst. In his time psychoanalysts were primarily Freudians, Klienians or part of the British Psychoanalytical Society. He found himself in the last group with the likes of another favorite of mine, John Bowlby. His theory describes "the ordinary devoted mother...an example of the way in which the foundations of health are laid down by the ordinary mother in her ordinary loving care of her own baby". The beauty of this theory lies in the simplicity and attainability. He is basically saying that all an ordinary baby needs to develop into a healthy separate being, who is capable of mature object-relations, is an ordinary mother who can respond to her baby's needs. This I can do. I can listen to my instincts and be good enough to help Ellen navigate the complicated world of self formation. I am imperfect and Ellen will be imperfect and I hope to embrace this about myself and her so that she develops a sense of grace and forgiveness towards herself and others.
I have applied this theory to other areas of my life when needed. In graduate school I wrote the good enough thesis. I paired down my sites from ground breaking research that would be published in top journals to what do I need to do to develop a research project and write a thesis that I feel good about and will meet my programmatic needs.
I hope my friends who are new moms can embrace this theory as well. The world makes being a woman hard enough. I have watched friends struggle with trying to live up to so many different ideals as we traverse different stages of our lives. Most of these we have successfully navigated and I feel so blessed to have a network of strong females. As many of us begin the new role of parenting I see old anxieties coming back up. I see everyone working so hard to get it right and to be such great mothers. I wish I could tell them that they already have what it takes to be a great mother and that they are already doing what it takes to be good enough.
Love you all, Elizabeth

A Tale of Two Muffys

Most people don't have one Muffy in their life but Ellen has two! Aunt Muffy was named by our youngest cousin, Maudie, who struggled with saying Margaret. This name was semi-retired as Maudie is now 21 and can say Margaret quite well. When Muffy Dog came into our lives I knew I needed a prissy name for this sassy ball of fluff. I went to lunch with my co-workers and one of them suggested Muffy and I loved it! So, here we are with two Muffys who love our Little Bee so much! Love, Elizabeth

The Bee's New Hangin Spot

Cece and Grandpa bought Ellen a membership to the Children's Museum for Christmas. She loves it! This was our first trip there. Of course she loved the ball pit!

On the way to the Tot Spot we passed a cop car and she and Daddy just had to take a picture.

She loved all the different places to climb and crawl! These stairs are foam and very fun to crawl up and down. She thought this drumstick was pretty tasty!

Daddy was giving Ellen her first driving lesson. She is learning which is the gas peddle.

Ellen really liked these tubes with baby faces making different expressions. She laughed at the baby who was laughing! We look forward to many more Saturdays at the Children's Museum with our Little Bee! Love y'all, Elizabeth

Girlfriends

Ellen loves to spend time with her girlfriends! Her best girlfriend at school is Betsy. She and Betsy love to tear up the classroom and are always up to something! One day I picked Ellen up from school and she and Betsy were sitting in the Bye Bye Buggy in coordinating outfits! I had to call Betsy's mom and ask when they planned this! Ellen is not supposed to be on the phone after 9:00.

Ellen also hangs with older girls. Here she is with Caroline at the Children's Museum. A couple of weeks ago we went out to dinner with Caroline and when she got in the car Ellen was so happy to see her that she started waving at her! I had never seen her do this before and was so proud. She and Caroline had a blast in the backseat talking and singing songs. Miss Bee thinks Caroline is pretty cool! I love all our sweet girlfriends, Elizabeth

Bee Sitting

On days that Ellen is not able to go to school, she is lucky to spend time with her Cece. During the day Cece will send me shots of what Ellen is up to. Sometimes she likes to take Winnie for a walk.

Other times she helps Cece in the kitchen.

One day they went shopping and she tried to pick out shoes that she knew Mommy would not approve. Thankfully, these did not come home with her! Love y'all, Elizabeth

As if I had the time...

When Ellen was born I decided to start a tradition of needlepointing an ornament for her each year. This is the first one I did. I will post another picture of it when I get it back from the finisher. These ornaments will capture her interests from that year.

Now I am working on this Tom Kitten. I plan to make it into a purse for Ellen. I hope she likes it! She is very interested in purses and dumping out their contents. I can't wait to see what she will keep in her purse.

This will be my next project. This is only part of it but it will be a little bee box. Aunt Muffy and John gave me a gift certificate to the needlepoint store and this is what I picked out. I don't have much time to work on needlepoint because our Little Bee is full of energy. When she goes down for a nap I can get a little bit done at a time, after the housework, cooking and all of that is done! Love y'all, Elizabeth

Kisses

Mommy and Daddy can't give our Angel enough kisses! We love you and love that you have learned how to give us kisses! So Sweet. Love, Elizabeth

School Fun

We love our school so much! Bee's teachers are so sweet and love her so much. These are some pictures that they posted on their private, parents only, site. Some are from a while back when she was just a Wee Bee.

Her classroom has so many different toys for each developmental stage she goes through. This toy would never capture her attention now but she does love to talk to the smaller babies while they sit in the bouncy seat. Her teachers call her "The Ambassador" because she crawls around the classroom visiting with all her friends. When they go for a walk in the Bye-Bye Buggy she babbles and waves to everyone they pass.

All that socializing can really wear a girl out! Love y'all, Elizabeth

Mommy Loves

Oh, Angel! Do you have any idea how loved you are? You are the answer to so many prayers and have made your Mommy so happy. I love to lay with you and watch you sleep so sweetly. You are such a cuddle bug and love to take naps with your Mommy and Daddy. We can not believe how blessed we are to be your parents! Love you, Elizabeth

My Boots are Totally Cute!

Lately Mommy has had a very good reason to wear her Ugg boots. Last week Houston had quite the cold snap and we are in for another one this week. Our Little Bee loves loves loves shoes!

I helped her climb into my boots and she thought this was hilarious. She was cracking herself up!

Little Bee, next winter Mommy promises to buy you your own Ugg boots. Love you, Elizabeth

Uh Oh!

Uh Oh! The Little Bee is mobile and into everything! This morning she unrolled a whole roll of toilet paper. Look how cute she was when she got caught! This kept her busy while Mommy put on her make-up. When I picked her up from school her teachers let me know that she had been crawling on top of one of the babies in her class and tried to touch his eye. Don't worry, her they caught her before she got to him. Oh, Little Bee!

You wore yourself out with all this mischief today! Look at you sleeping like an angel.

How could such sweet toes be up to anything naughty? Love y'all, Elizabeth

New Year's Eve

This year we opted for a quiet New Year's Eve at the bay house with the Bee and two of her best guy buddies. The mommies and daddies had a fun dinner (pictured above) and the babies had a ball pit (pictured below)!

Bee and Davis Monster loved the ball pit and Charlie Bear had a great time watching all the fun. It was hysterical to see Davis hurl himself into the pit and then wiggle his legs with excitement! I swear he would have napped in the ball pit if we let him.

Ellen and Davis helped the daddies and I make dinner. Ellen had such a great time with her two sweet friends and so did mommy and daddy! Love y'all, Elizabeth
